Born into a poor family, Buppa came out as number eight of nine children (the Brady Bunch on steroids). They were so dirt poor (please hold your violins) that even to own dirt was something of a pipe dream. Unfortunately for Buppa’s mum and dad, by the 1970s, the child labour laws were tightening up. Realising their young ones weren’t destined for a life in the sulphur mines, Buppa’s mum instead taught them the secret ‘ways’ of her baking. In the hope of winning money, Buppa’s mother had her children enter the Adult’ categories of baking competitions at their local fair. To the chagrin of the (much) older and established contestants, Buppa found herself the winner of the best ‘Chocolate chip cookies’ and best Brownies’ as well as being ten dollars richer. At the time Buppa was all of nine years of age.
Forward a few decades, and Buppa has since retired from her local fair bake-offs, and instead channelled her talent and energy for baking into ‘Buppa’s Bakehouse’. It’s not about reinventing the wheel. Which is just as well, because as it stands, the wheel is pretty good – just not very tasty. Put simply, in Buppa’s own words, ‘I bake because I love it’. Every ounce of that love is poured straight into the ingredients of Buppa’s creations. Real ingredients made mostly by Buppa herself or when needed, sourced from quality products, irrespective of cost. Buppa’s baking doesn’t resemble that of the botoxed, plastic coated, preservative encased baked goods (a term used very lightly, unlike the fat that goes into them) you find in other establishments. The only thing pre-packaged about Buppa is the passion she has long held for baking. Ultimately, the only way these words can translate into any tangible meaning is if you come in and experience the goodness for yourself.
